Shared by Twitter user @bandeauxpat on Tuesday, a series of photos depicted a Black man cuddled up with a white woman as they stood among cotton branches in a vast field. In one photo, the couple appears to be hugging. In another, they share a kiss as the woman wraps her hands around his throat while in the third picture—which really seemed to tick people on social media off—the pair kiss while the man holds up a piece of cotton.

The identity of the couple was not revealed, nor was it immediately clear when the photos were taken or if the images were a part of an engagement shoot as some people assumed.

The tweet has since gone viral, receiving more than 275,000 likes and 34,000 retweets. Thousands of people responded to the photos as well, and, naturally, they didn’t have the nicest things to say.

“Another black brother lost and confused smh,” one person wrote in response to the photos.

Many of the commenters were mostly flabbergasted that the interracial couple would take such photos in a cotton field considering the fact that cotton is largely associated with slavery. Before slavery was abolished, Black Americans were forced to pick cotton day after day with no breaks, and even after slavery, Black sharecroppers were roped into picking cotton for the bare minimum by white landowners.

“Picking cotton AND picking a white girl? Pick a struggle,” one person tweeted.

“It’s this part for me,” another person tweeted with a screenshot of the man holding up a piece of cotton while sharing a smooch with the woman.

“It’s really this photo for me. Him holding the cotton. Her holding his neck. Oh my,” another Twitter user wrote.

“She even has her hands [on] his throat,” someone wrote.

“He holding up the cotton while being choked by the white woman wild,” a Twitter user wrote.

Another tweeted: “Her choking him while he holds a piece of cotton….I don’t…”

There were a few people who seemed to be on the couple’s side and didn’t understand why everyone was so outraged by the series of photos.

“See I just saw it as a young couple in a pretty cotton field?! I swear everyone wants to be offended by anything these days…” one Twitter user wrote.

Another wrote: “Am I really the only one who thinks this could be perfectly innocent and they picked the location cuz it was aesthetic? Lmao ppl always lookin for something to criticize man.”
