Spanish Primera Liga football club Villarreal have sacked coach Juan Carlos Garrido following a poor start to the season.

Garrido, who was the former coach of Villarreal’s B-team, had been in charge of the first team for two years, but has paid the price for a disastrous start to the campaign which has seen Villarreal drop to one place above the relegation zone in the Primera Liga.

Villarreal were also knocked out of the group stage of the Champions League following the worst ever performance by a Spanish team in the competition in which his side lost all six of their matches.

However, the final straw came Wednesday night when Villarreal were knocked out of the Spanish Copa del Rey following a 0-2 home defeat to third tier side Mirandes. Villarreal had drawn the first leg 1-1 and were expected to progress in the competition, but the defeat saw his team beaten 1-3 on aggregate.

Shortly after the final whistle, the club issued an official communique thanking Garrido for his work and confirmed his sacking.

Garrido becomes the third coach to lose his job in Spain this season following Michael Laudrup, who left Mallorca and Hector Cuper who resigned from Racing Santander at the start of December, however, he is unlikely to be the last and could soon be joined by Atletico Madrid‘s Gregorio Manzano, Xinhua reported.

Atletico’s dreadful run of form was extended this season as they were knocked out of the Copa with a 1-0 home defeat to Albacete, who also play in the third tier of the Spanish game. Albacete won 3-1 on aggregate.

Meanwhile bottom of the Zaragoza were also knocked out the cup by second division Alcorcon, leaving their coach, Javier Aguirre also fearing for his job.
